Zoroastrianism has had an impact that is rarely realised in the Judaeo-Christian world through its contribution to the concepts of heaven and hell deriving from its ethical dualism.Īssociated with this was the concept of the Day of Judgement, at which point, on the third day/fourth night after death, the soul crossed a bridge, Pol e Chinvat, on which its good deeds were weighed against its bad deeds. Prior to the philosophy of Zoroaster, entities such as Mehr, Hom, Verahram, parallels of which were found in Vedic texts were venerated.Īlthough there is no mention of these in the text attributed to Zoroaster, it is believed that this ancient tradition survived and merged with Zoroastrianism so that they re-acquire their earlier prominent positions in the religious recitations by priests and lay people.Ī reflection of this is found in the name of Dar (b)e Mehr which in Farsi denotes the temple. Thus Zoroastrians are engaged in an internalized struggle of ethical dualism. The alternative choice of deceit, lies and unkindness, namely, impurity of thought, word and deed, will lead to unhappiness, enmity and war. We are told that to follow the path of "Asha", (good order, harmony, truth, summarized by purity in thought, word and deed) will lead to happiness ("ushta") for both ourselves and others. Zoroaster's message is basically that we should be aware of the struggle which these two forces engage us in and know the consequences of following one rather than the other. Good and evil are understood as realities encountered in the inner mind - the conscience - that appear to operate as twin energies, equally present and both exerting a pull over us. In this injunction are two fundamental ideas: free will and individual responsibility for one's own actions and the concepts of good and evil. His originality is further seen in his injunction found in the Gathas, that those who are listening should use their free will to choose their own path, that of good or that of evil. His understanding of life was based on his realisation that all the manifestations of creation had to come ultimately from one all-powerful energy - God or the Self-Creator. What made Zoroaster's ideas radical was firstly his revelation that there was one creator, Ahura Mazda, the Wise Lord, at a time when it was commonplace to worship the numerous natural elements as gods in their own right. Rock stars like Bob Geldof and the Queen band were champions of the poor that day. Many CAFOD and aid agency staff were in Wembley that day and there was a feeling that after the concert there would be more money for their work, but, more than that, there could be a transformed world where the vulnerable would not be simply left to die at the peripheries. Hope is brought alive in the Live Aid concert of 1985, showing that affluent rock bands, music fans and ordinary people of all ages can unite in the common cause of helping the vulnerable. The film touches on Mercury's respect for his parents' Parsi Zoroastrian beliefs by lifting a signature line - "good thoughts, good words, good deeds" - directly from the faith's "Three Good Things" ethos, as stressed in the Avesta, the religion's sacred text.īut perhaps it's the concluding 20 minutes of the film 'Bohemian Rhapsody' that highlights the theme of the common good, recognised in the social teaching of the great faiths. Incidentally, the word in the song Bohemian Rhapsody 'Bismillah' is "In the name of God" in Arabic. Part of the reason that 'Highlander' is a cult fantasy film about the challenge of being immortal, is the haunting Queen soundtrack, especially 'Who wants to live forever'. Many find spiritual depth in the words of Queen songs. Joseph's Catholic Convent School in Zanzibar. Yet, there were Catholic links earlier - his final two years of schooling had been spent at St. Freddie Mercury is said to have made a grand entrance to the church wearing a feather boa and with a woman on either arm. When John and a Catholic student of Maria Assumpta, Veronica Tetzlaff, married in January 1975, it was at the nearby Carmelite church in Church Street. In fact, Maria Assumpta is where the John Deacon first met Brian May and Roger Taylor, and where John and Brian met their wives. Well, in the early 1970s, when boys from London's Imperial College - including Brian May - attended discos at Maria Assumpta Teacher Training College in Kensington, the college, which later became Heythrop College, played a big part in the Queen story. Is there much of a link to the Catholic world in the Queen story?

7/22/2023 0 Comments Duck billed platypus baby gangstaThey produce milk, but don’t have nipples.įemales have mammary glands for milk production, but no teats. They hatch from their eggs using an egg tooth, are completely blind and hairless. This means under a blacklight they glow! No one knows why yet. They store both food and gravel in their hamster-like cheek pouches which they take to the surface to munch on.Īmazingly, just last year (2020) scientists discovered that they are biofluorescent. Instead, they use gravel to grind down their food. Their duck-shaped bills don’t have teeth. Instead, their gullet goes straight to their intestines. Like fish, they don’t have an acid-producing stomach. They swim along the bottoms of steams, using the electroreceptors in their bills to find their prey. When they hunt their nose, eyes and ears are closed. Platypus don’t use sight or smell for hunting. The receptors for this are found in their bill. They use this to hunt prey hiding in the mud of stream floors. They are one of the very few mammals that use electroreception, aka the ability to sense the electricity created by the movement of muscles. Males have an ankle spur that delivers venom strong enough to kill dogs and cause excruciating pain in humans. While it might look like their tails are for swimming, they are in fact used primarily for storing fat, like a camel’s hump. Their large beaver-like tail is used for fat storage. They are well-adapted for this, with webbed feet for swimming and fur that is waterproof to keep them warm. This means that they live both in water and on land. Both lay eggs, which later hatch live young. There are only two kinds of egg-laying mammal left on the planet today.Īlmost every mammal gives birth to live young, except for the platypus and echidna. This group contains only 5 species still alive today: platypuses and 4 species of echidna. This is one of the three main groups of living mammals. They are part of a group called “monotremes”. The appearance of platypuses is so odd that the first European naturalists who studied a preserved one thought they were fake and made of other animals stuck together.Ģ. People didn’t believe the platypus was real. They are classified as near-threatened by the IUCN, which has recommended that it is upgraded to a threatened species, due to habitat destruction and declining numbers in all states. However, they are now a legally protected species in Australia. Platypus are rare, elusive and were historically extensively hunted for its fur. Life span is around 17 years in captivity, but it’s thought to be less in the wild. They are nocturnal, meaning they are active mainly at night, and also crepuscular meaning they are also active during twilight (sunset and sunrise). Their predators include birds (hawks, owls, and eagles), snakes, water rats, goannas (a large lizard), and crocodiles! They hunt using their bills which sense both movement and electric signals produced by moving animals. They hunt fresh-water crustaceans, such as shrimp and crayfish. They spend most of their time in the water, but also have burrows in the side of riverbanks where they rest. They inhabit small streams and the surrounding areas. They are native to Eastern Australia, ranging from the colder highlands to tropical rainforests. Unlike smaller snails, the dire snail is capable of moving in this manner quickly, but that might simply be due to its size.ĭire snails secrete mucus externally to keep their soft bodies from drying out. This motion is powered by succeeding waves of muscular contractions that move down the ventral of the foot. Snails move by gliding along on their muscular foot, which is lubricated with mucus and covered with small protrusions approximating epithelial cilia, but of course, in the case of dire snails, these pseudopods are much larger. The research team theorized that the filament would provide a moment of rigidity to the tentacle, as the tendons and muscles around it and the poison gland contracted, allowing the snail to shoot, or inject, hydrochloric acid at or into its prey. In theory, a dire snail could therefore stab a creature with their tentacles, while secreting a burst of hydrochloric acid, explaining not only one of the most perplexing injuries in the LARP encounter (an acid burn to the hand,) but also, many medieval doodles of dire snails "jousting" with their tentacles. This result, plus an analysis of the chemical residue, led the researchers at the University of Paris to conclude that this poison gland contains hydrochloric acid. An attempt to drain the poison to examine it resulted in the melting of all the sampling equipment. However, the tentacles of the dire snail specimen also contained rigid, filament-like structures in a coil at their base, along with a set of tendons, tightly wound like a spring, and a large poison gland. Vision is usually poor but important to snail navigation. The upper, longer tentacles contain the eyestalks and the lower ones the scent and taste organs. On most mollusc species, these are sense organs only. They are pulminates, meaning they have a lung, not gills.Ī unique feature of the dire snail is the deadly poison glands in its "antennae," which are in fact tentacles. The specimen killed by the LARPers was badly damaged, but examination indicates that dire snails share similar morphology with more familiar, smaller snails, just in gargantuan proportions.ĭire snails appear to be a unique type of land snail significant because most snail species are marine snails. The LARPers have named these creatures "dire snails," and the name has stuck. One encounter, which took place in France at an annual LARPing event, resulted in three casualties, including one fatality. Giant snails have been sighted in the past few months in the former Protectorate of The Missing House, one of many legendary and mythological creatures that have begun to show credible sightings as Literomancy grows in power and prevalence. It was generally assumed, however, that the many depictions of armoured knights fighting giant snails was nothing more than an entertaining flght of fantasy. For instance, the prevalance of violent rabbits in medieval manuscript marginalia has, of late, been attributed to anti- Owsla propaganda on the part of Inquisition-sympathizers. Recent events, including the return of magic with the reawakening of The Iron Tome, have suggested that this may have been mistaken. The prevailing theory was that it was something like "Kilroy was here " the equivalent of restroom graffiti, a medieval scribe's in-joke. Medievalist scholars have long been aware that illuminators of medieval manuscripts liked to doodle in the margins. 7/22/2023 0 Comments Vanilla podThe Vanilla Pod has been rated in ‘Tom Doorley’s Top 100 Places To Eat in Ireland’ and has consistently featured in the coveted Bridgestone & Georgina Campbell Guide to Ireland. Brought back to Europe by Hernan Cortes in 1529 after having tasted the flavors and virtues with the local Aztec tribes, it was only introduced towards the middle of the 19th century in Reunion Island before being established in Madagascar in 1880. A good vanilla pod should be flexible and slightly moist. The origin of Vanilla Planifolia found on hot Malagasy lands dates back to its discovery by the Spanish conquistadors who landed in Central America during the 16th century. Particularly used by industrialists and companies creating natural flavorings wishing a product more inclined to be handled according to their transformation process, also requested by craftsmen preferring pods of less water-rich qualities. Indeed, depending on the type of Red vanilla considered, the breadth of its aromatic palette (more than 150 compounds including vanillin) in relation to the quantity of initial material, makes it a solution of choice for caviar extraction and processing in the form of powder, liquid extract or other formulas (oleoresins). Its advanced desiccation allows a better yield of extracted vanillin per kilo which offers a cost advantage. It reveals good aromas commonly found in Gourmet vanilla and TK but more raw. In fact, ye would never have been correct, because ye is a subjective (nominative) pronoun only, never an objective (accusative) pronoun.Ī variant text was printed in 1775 in The Beauties of the Magazines, and Other Periodical Works, Selected for a Series of Years. Some variants give the pronoun in the first line as ye instead of you, in a pseudo-archaism. This is the case already in the 1775 variant, and is also reflected by Dickens's replacement of the verb rest by bless in A Christmas Carol. notes that the first line "often is mispunctuated" as "God rest you, merry gentlemen" because in contemporary language, rest has lost its use "with a predicate adjective following and qualifying the object" ( Century Dictionary). In Romeo and Juliet, the servant who inadvertently invites them to Capulet's masqued ball twice tells Romeo and Benvolio, "Rest you merry." The transitive use of the verb rest in the sense "to keep, cause to continue, to remain" is typical of 16th- to 17th-century language. However, merry is often misinterpreted as an adjective modifying gentlemen. It appears in Shakespeare's 1599 play As You Like It. The historic meaning of the phrase "God rest you merry" is 'may God grant you peace and happiness' the Oxford English Dictionary records uses of this phrase from 1534 onwards. The following version of the first verse is found in a manuscript dating from the early 1650s: It is also quoted in George Eliot's 1861 novel Silas Marner. The carol is referred to in Charles Dickens' 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. Īn article in the March 1824 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine complains that, in London, no Christmas carols are heard "excepting some croaking ballad-singer bawling out 'God rest you, merry gentlemen', or a like doggerel". Hone's version of the tune differs from the present melody in the third line: the full current melody was published by Chappell in 1855. It had been associated with the carol since at least the mid-18th century, when it was recorded by James Nares in a hand-written manuscript under the title "The old Christmas Carol". Soon after, it appeared in a parody published in 1820 by William Hone. The better-known traditional English melody is in the minor mode the earliest printed edition of the melody appears to be in a rondo arrangement for fortepiano by Samuel Wesley, which was already reviewed in 1815. Īlthough there is a second tune known as 'Cornish', in print by 1833 and referred to as "the usual version" in the 1928 Oxford Book of Carols, this version is seldom heard today. Others date it later, to the eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries. Some sources claim that the carol dates as far back as the 16th century. A precisely datable reference to the carol is found in the November 1764 edition of the Monthly Review. The earliest known printed edition of the carol is in a broadsheet dated to c. It contains a slightly different version of the first line from that found in later texts, with the first line "Sit yo w merry gentlemen" (also transcribed "Sit you merry gentlemen" and "Sit yo u merry gentlemen"). 1827 publication of the melody, set to satirical lyrics by William HoneĪn early version of this carol is found in an anonymous manuscript, dating from the 1650s. 7/21/2023 0 Comments B1 archiver removeIf in doubt, you can go through the reviews of this application.
